Museum Profile

The Museum Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf was founded in 1987. It is dedicated to the research and mediation of the regional history of the borough and the cultural history of Berlin in general. Since January 2012, the museum is housed in the Oppenheim Villa. The prestigious villa, built in 1881, was the summer residence for Margarete Oppenheim (née Mendelssohn) and Otto Georg Oppenheim. In 1911 the Oppenheim Villa was sold to the city of Charlottenburg. The former estate at this place, already inhabited by the Mendelssohn family, was named “Sorgenfrei” (sans souci), which is also the title of an exhibition documenting both, the history of the villa and its inhabitants.

Exhibitions

The main emphasis of the museum is on the historical Art Collection of the once independent city of Charlottenburg and the permanent exhibition “WESTEN!”.

The Art Collection was compiled by the initiative of the “Deputation for Artistic Matters” of the town of Charlottenburg in 1908 and experienced a significant expansion in 1912 by the private Raussendorff Foundation. It primarily consists of paintings and sculptures from the 19th century and the Berlin Secession, including works by Walter Leistikow, Hans Baluschek, Franz Skarbina and Max Liebermann. The collection is being presented to the public for the very first time in the permanent exhibition “SammlerStücke” on the first floor of the Villa Oppenheim.

Since 2014 the show “WESTEN!” in the Museum Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf traces the history of the 2001 joined district, focusing on the special role of both “beautiful sisters” Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf emerging as a second town center City-West, alongside the Historical Center of Berlin. With the use of multimedia and a wide range of interesting objects the exhibition is devoted to events and people that have shaped the district for a period of over three centuries.

There are also special temporary exhibitions committed to topics and people of regional and cultural history.

Research and Archive

The top floor of Villa Oppenheim accommodates the archive, the library and the inventory of the museum. Access to parts of the collection is possible on request and arrangement of an appointment.

Events

A wide spectrum of regional and cultural-historic lectures, readings and other events, guided tours and concerts together with the permanent and special exhibitions make Villa Oppenheim a cultural center of the local museum landscape. Located idyllically next to Schustehruspark, you can experience a combination of both animating and relaxing pleasures of arts and culture.
